matt mark  Matthew Henderson  matt mark

Matt began studying ceramics under John Arnold at The University of Texas, El Paso where he received his Bachelor of Art in 1981. Then in 1986 he completed the Master of Fine Art program at The University of North Texas under Elmer Taylor.

Upon graduating from UNT Matt worked at Mark Of The Potter for a year before accepting a teaching position at a college in Michigan.  After living and teaching in Michigan for 4 winters (Lousy weather but wonderful folks), Matt returned to Mark Of The Potter and has been making pottery there ever since.

With over 35 years of experience creating pottery and teaching at the university level Matt is still passionate about the craft and art of clay.  He still feels there is nothing more gratifying than seeing his pottery being used and enjoyed.

Matt works on site at Mark Of The Potter as lead potter and kiln master.  He can be seen demonstrating pottery making every other weekend in our store.

The images here are snapshots to give you an idea of the style and some of the items that Matt typically does.  They do not necessarily represent what we currently have in stock.  There may be a special order or two mixed in here as well.
So it is important to remember that the inventory is always changing.

New work comes out of the kiln every four weeks or so depending on the current firing schedule.

All of our pottery is food safe using only lead-free glazes and clays.  Microwave safe and most are oven safe too.  They can be washed in the dishwasher or as some customers prefer, hand washed.

Thanks to all of Matt's fans and to the friends, neighbors and visitors locally and from around the world.  Mark of the Potter would not be the same without you!
